He was neither a member of the Union of Writers nor a political dissident. Kharitonov differed from most other aspiring Soviet writers in his independence from both official and underground trends in the arts. Kharitonov collapsed and died as he walked down Pushkin Street, near the center of Moscow, after he had worked all night on a new play. Yevgeny Kharitonov, one of seven younger Soviet writers whose efforts to form an experimental literary workshop led to a series of clashes with the authorities last year, died of a heart attack here June 29, literary sources reported.
